Those Who Drift
My brothers and I are those who Drift. We skim the desert sands over sun scorched ruins. We float between the trees of The Great Green. We glide between the marble columns of Truscanni cities, pale reflections of a long dead Empire. We Slide about the edges of civilization, from city to city, town to town, belonging nowhere
The itinerant, extended family units of “Those Who Drift” are known by many names in almost every known civilized society. Sturdy survivors of the magiclysm who aimlessly roamed through the waste of the Reaching Sands, they never made the transition back in to urban life. They have no cities and call no nation home but travel from place to place following unknown calls to travel. The men are known as skilled trainers of all sorts of animals and love to gamble and race, but also have amazing skills at patching and repairing, cobbling and tinkering. Women seem to have endless skill at sewing, weaving, beadwork and jewelry craft. As a rule they distrust “civilization” and any one outside their own tight knit society. They have a deep abiding fear/respect for magic and believe in any number of superstitions. Matriarchs of a family clan usually have some natural skill at minor divination though not always sharp or precise.
Those who drift have few luxuries and live a hard life so thus celebrate life’s simple pleasures in music, rhythmic singing and wild, spinning dance. Most civilizations consider them to be fast talking thieves, drunks and smugglers dealing in stolen and black market goods and most of the time they are correct. If asked about a shifty deal gone wrong, they always have an off hand explanation of why it is not their fault and that the other person should have paid more attention to the deal, or looked more closely at the goods, etc.
To truly be accepted as one with a group of Those who drift is to gain brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles for life. And to make enemies with a group is to anger an army of shadows who are here one day and gone the next and have memories that never forget.
